Intervention science and research examine methods
to test what works, for whom, under what circumstances.
Minority populations are underrepresented in the
studies, limiting their generalizability.
Furthermore, evidence-based practices are not
always sustainable in community settings. This
workshop will provide an overview of methods for
community-based intervention research, with an
emphasis on the development of community-relevant
targets for intervention and the inclusion of
minority and underrepresented populations. Presenters
will describe current frameworks for developing
and maintaining communitybased partnerships to
identify relevant community problems and approaches
to their solution. Techniques for developing and
analyzing research projects will be presented.
The range of research designs
available to test interventions will be presented,
with special attention to trade-offs in rigor
and relevance. Finally, presenters will provide
an overview of the “gold standard”
of the development of evidence, the randomized
controlled trial, and use it to compare and contrast
other designs for testing effectiveness of community-based
interventions. Sponsored in part by The Center
for Race and Social Problems.

“Biosocial Methods for Social Work
Research”
July 26-28, 2011
Michael Vaughn, PhD (Saint Louis University, School
of Social Work)

Michael Vaughn,
PhD
St. Louis University

Research funding and policy priorities are increasingly
requiring fuller and conceptually nuanced integration
of biological and environmental variables. In
this three day training course, Dr. Michael Vaughn
will introduce social work researchers to a range
of biosocial methods that can be employed into
a number of research designs. Topics to be included
are the principles of geneenvironment interplay,
the use of a broad array of
biomarkers, and the integration of neuroscience
approaches in social work research. Ethical issues
and other impediments to incorporating biosocial
methods into social work research will be examined.
Geared toward doctoral students and early career
researchers, attendees will develop a biosocial
conceptual framework pertinent to their area of
research.
