1:00 pm – 5:00 pm Half-Day Workshop
Culturally-Sensitive Research: Emerging Approaches in Theory, Measurement and Methods for Effective Research on Acculturation, Ethnic Identity and Gender
Presenters: Felipe González Castro, Tanya Nieri - Arizona State University

This workshop will provide participants with innovative, culturallysensitive, and also scientifically rigorous content for designing and conducting culturally-sensitive research that examines the constructs of acculturation, ethnic identity, and gender identity. These approaches will be relevant for research in the areas of: HIV/AIDS research, drug abuse research, research on youth and adult development, and research with immigrant and nativeborn Hispanics and other ethnic populations who are undergoing the process of acculturative change and/or upward sociocultural mobility.

This workshop will have the following learning objectives:

(1) to provide a framework for innovative social work research that addresses these concepts;
(2) to review issues in the conceptualization and measurement of these constructs, from a broad-based mixed-methods (qualitative-quantitative) approach;
(3) to present examples of relevant measurement and to present relevant scales and measures;
(4) to review research design and implementation issues that arise when working with these constructs under the noted framework; and
(5) to offer interactive questionand- answer periods and simple exercises that will facilitate effective research with these issues and research challenges.

1:30 pm – 5:30 pm Half-Day Workshop
Intervention Research: From Treatment Manuals to Funded Research
Presenters: Mark Fraser, Sheryl Zimmerman - University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Using treatment manuals is an integral element of evidencebased practice, and developing treatment manuals is an integral element of successfully securing funding for intervention research. The purpose of this pre-conference workshop is to describe steps in the development of treatment manuals and to embed these steps in an overarching approach to intervention research. The presenters will focus on conceptualizing interventions from risk factors and risk processes, and sequentially refining interventions through programs of funded research. Emphasis will be placed on both developing practice innovations and on strategies for securing funding to refine them over time.

1:00 pm -5:00 p.m. Half-Day Workshop
Quasi-Experimental Design
Presenter: Charles S Reichardt – University of Denver

This workshop will provide an accessible but rigorous explication of classic quasi-experimental designs and of the variety of ways in which these can be embellished so that a high quality design will result, tailored to fit the demands of your research project. The workshop will review analysis strategies for data, show you how to recognize alternative explanations for quasiexperimental study results, and how to take these into account to maximize the credibility of your results. It will cover the most recent theoretical developments in quasi-experimentation. The goal of the workshop will be more applied than theoretical, with the intent to give you practical knowledge to launch successful quasi-experiments, even under difficult field conditions.
